From Earthquake Rubble to Interdisciplinary Knowledge: The Real Origin of Sustainability Lab

In 2015, Nepal experienced a devastating earthquake. Instead of starting with a polished sustainability thesis, we started with a practical question: What can we do with what is already here?

In 2015, Nepal experienced a devastating earthquake.

Instead of starting with a polished sustainability thesis or a venture pitch deck, Sustainability Lab started with a simple, urgent, and practical question:

What can we do with what is already here?

And we built a physical space directly from the remnants.

Chapter 01: Reclaim

Waste became walls.

Doors and windows were salvaged from collapsed structures. Reclaimed bricks from Dasharath Rangasala and traditional Chaukosh frames were fitted by hand. Palette boards were transformed into interior partitions. Discarded futsal turf became durable flooring. Used vehicle tyres were converted into chairs and work tables.

That was not an aesthetic trend manufactured for marketing. It was the physical founding DNA of Sustainability Lab. We learned that reclaiming materials also meant reclaiming possibility.


Chapter 02: Connect

Then something even more interesting happened: the physical space evolved into a living community ecosystem.

  • It became a vibrant coworking space where independent creators, researchers, and makers gathered daily.
  • It hosted Nutri Kitchen, bridging locally produced nutritious food directly into the physical space.
  • Initiatives like Poshan Agro and Kalpabrikshya took root and grew within the ecosystem.
  • We opened the doors for continuous training, internships, workshops, and collaborative seminars.
  • It became the regular gathering point for the Nursery Lane Tole Sudhar Samiti, where the local community met for open town-hall discussions.

Crucially, our interns were never confined to a single academic discipline. We worked alongside psychology students, trekking guides, tour guides, and traditional craftsmen, people bringing completely different life knowledge, street-level intuition, and cultural understanding to the table.

That detail forms the bedrock of our philosophy:

“We don’t need your information. We need your knowledge.”

Sustainability is not an isolated scientific discipline solved in a silo. It happens at the dynamic intersection where different lived experiences meet.


Chapter 03: Experiment

Now, we enter the next chapter.

Instead of only asking “What can we build with reclaimed materials?”, we can ask a broader, more ambitious question:

What can we build with the knowledge, technology, resources, and systems already around us?

Today, Sustainability Lab connects:

  • Cutting-Edge Technology: Artificial intelligence, satellite imagery, remote sensing, and scientific assays.
  • Physical Making & Bio-Materials: Developing functional sustainable goods like KĀRVA (SL / 001) from regional plant fibers and local timber.
  • Human & Community Knowledge: Local farmers, regional artisans, and interdisciplinary problem solvers who simply know something useful.

Sustainability isn’t a discipline. It’s a way of looking at what we already have, materials, knowledge, people, spaces, technology, and opportunities, and asking what else they can become.
